Boy! Oh Boy!! Trying to fend off my garden from these CRITTERS in my back yard may turn out to be a full-time job! I happened to walk past the dining room this morning and looked out the window which overlooks my garden and saw ole’ BUGS BUNNY making a straight b-line for my garden!! I banged on the window, but he kept right on charging! I opened the window and yelled at him, but he didn’t care! It was like he had CARROTS on the brain and nothing was going to stop him. Fortunately, my brave little Lucky handled his business and chased the silly wabbit away. WHEW!! Close call!
So if you come over to the Martin household and we’re serving rabbit stew…don’t ask any questions and we’ll tell you no lies!

I’ve been trying to get up the nerve to grow a garden for YEARS. And when I say years, I literally mean Y-E-A-R-S! I think I bought a gardening set of tools back in the 90′s. And they sat with dust on them for so long that my dog at that time Daffy decided that since I wasn’t using them, they’d make better chew toys instead!
My hesitation stems from the fact that I have never had a green thumb! My grandmother Lonia and my sister Pam had the ability to take a dead stick, put it in the ground, water it, and the next day have a TREE growing. Me??? I have been known to kill a CACTUS! (Seriously.) So growing a garden has been a secret desire, but I’ve never had the nerve to kill plants on such a massive basis. And then, who could handle the REJECTION?? I think I would take it personally that if I took some soil, planted some seeds in the ground and they didn’t grow! Has the whole plant world blacklisted me for the cactus incident??? Hmm…I wonder…

But in light of rising produce prices and a fear of e-coli, I’m growing my own vegetables (or I’m going to try!) I’ve had enough of paying $3.00 for ONE stank tomato!! I’m conquering my fear and actually going to do it! So a few weeks ago, I bought some raised bed kits made of recycled plastic materials (HEY! If you’re going to go green, you might as well go the WHOLE way!) I’ve been good about watering and being faithful to taking care of my little beds. I even did the research to find out which vegetables grow best beside each other and how far apart to space my seedlings. I’m so geeked!!
I planted some lettuce, broccoli, summer squash, peppers, zucchini, potatoes, watermelon, onions, carrots, cucumbers, and herbs in some little container planters.

Then, I got really cocky with the container thing and planted 2 different kind of tomatoes (beefsteak and cherry). Those tomatoes really took off so I got even more excited and started to smell myself and decided to try one of those Topsy Turvy things they advertise on t.v. and bought one for my cherry tomatoes and one for strawberries too. Nevermind that Lamar hates them both, I’m a GARDNER now DANG IT!! MY GARDEN MUST GROW!! HA!!

All my container plants are doing really well! It makes me soooo happy just to see their tiny little blooms growing! And when stuff actually starts to get big enough to eat…I’m not going to be able to take it!!
But I was still a little worried about my beds. After all, the container plants grew from already formed plants I bought at Lowes. What about my little seedlings? Has the BLACK THUMB CURSE been lifted from me?? Will my garden actually grow anything?? I started to worry a little but then yesterday, I came home and saw this…
I’m so excited! And what is that??…..Wait…let me see…Is my thumb starting to turn GREEN???!!!

I am not the ONLY one who should be blamed for spoiling our dog, Lucky, rotten. Lamar is definitely guilty too! Okay…yes, I have been known on occasion to spend hours snuggling on the couch with “the dooby dog”. And yes, even as I type this post, he is cuddled beside me laying on his back with his paws in the air in a blissful sleep. (Ahh…the life of a pampered dog!)
But the other day, when Lamar was outside mowing the lawn, I caught him red handed!! See for yourself!
(Hint: Guess who was getting a ride with Daddy on the mower!)
